So sex appeal is more important than talent now?

Well, the workshop performance was yesterday, and I didn’t completely blow my solo! I can’t say the same for the dance portion, but it was a start. Despite the frustration involved, I’d say that it was still a pretty good experience. I met a lot of great people who I’m sure I’ll be seeing a lot of next year at my new school! Anyways, now we’re at the lake house. It’s a bit lonesome up here at the moment, but at least I get to bring a friend up next weekend.

But all this is beside the point. Let’s move on to today’s topic, shall we? Yes, this blog post actually has a topic this time. Be proud! Anyways, I’m really getting sick of artists using sex appeal to sell their music. For instance, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. These two are tremendously talented, but this talent is greatly overshadowed by their provocative style of dress and good looks. Do you think either one of them would be as popular if they were just Plain Janes? I highly doubt it.  Look at the iTunes top ten chart. What does it include? Lady Gaga and Fergie, of course. Put on the radio and think about the artist who’s singing the song. You bet your life they’re good-looking.

My question is this: why is “the look” so important in the music industry? When you listen to a song, you should focus on the beat, the lyrics, the meaning. The last thing you should be thinking about is the singer’s appearance, but that’s what we seem to do. Music videos are no longer about showcasing an artist’s talent. Think of the Pussycat Dolls. What do they wear in their videos? Do you think that they’d have half as many male fans if they stopped dressing and dancing so provocatively? It seems like there’s really no place for an average-looking individual in the music industry these days, regardless of their talent. It’s a pity, isn’t it?

So what are your thoughts? Are you getting sick of sex appeal playing such an important factor in the music industry or do you think that “the look” is important among artists? Cast your vote in the poll or leave me a comment explaining your views. I’d love to hear from you.

  1. I know exactly what you mean. Growing up Britney Spears was getting REALLY popular. My mom instantly forbid me from listening to her. So I was like, mkay. Now that I’m older and I look back, I don’t think she had good songs. She has the voice, yes. But the songs had little to none resonable meaning. And it justs disgusts me. Lady GaGa and Katy Perry I agree. Well, I haven’t seen much of Katy. She has a good voice, and she puts it to good use. Minus some of her songs. But yes, I totally agree. Good female singers without sex appeal? BarlowGirl. Or the chickitas from Skillet. What, you want non Christian? K. How bout Aly and AJ? Good voices, good songs.

  2. Esp with pop music looks it was matters. Now I admit country stars can be good looking…but some aren’t. You can make it if you aren’t “sexy” but you’re going to worka lot harder. The sad thing is sex sells…it has since ancient times and it’s still true. The thing is to stand up and say yes I may like Carrie Underwood….but I also like this person you’ve never heard of.

  3. Why hello there Cocoa, I think this is a very interesting topic. I agree because I think that Lady Gaga and Katy Perry stink, but they are very pretty people so there for I know who they are. But if we had really old or ugly people singing in concert no many people would go and or vomit there heart out for them. This is also true in the movie business. Like Jake Gynehallynll (Donnie Darko, The Day After Tomorrow, October Sky) Me (being 15 and incredibly horomal) I have watched all of these movies and I am in love with him, because of his sex-appeal and this has helped the movie business alot. As well as me.

  4. Hey there. This is definitely an interesting topic. For the people I know, they probably wouldn’t buy the music if the artists singing wore baggy clothes, were overweights, etc. They might not even make a conscious decision, but that’s how their minds work. As far as an artist getting signed, unfortunatly it’s as important as everything else. And it’s a real shame, because once Plain Janes(The, say, 95% of the population) know this, they stop trying.

With female artists, I honestly think it’s quite disgraceful to women when they’re all wearing cat suits and skimpy bikinis. And with men…Well, you know, I can’t say I completely ignore when they’re good-looking, but I like them for their music, and their looks are just a bonus if I like their music.

But luckily this isn’t the way with all music, it’s mostly Top 40 Pop. Thank god for that.

  5. i can see your point, and as everyone has pointed it out sex sells. However a lot of these women, the main examples being Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, have always dressed like this. They were not forced and i have to say most likely love the clothes they were. It does in some case give bad impressions for younger girls telling them to dress this way and that, but i don’t think that the way they dress sells their music. It makes they more popular but Beth Ditto sells and see isn’t skinny.

I want to say its all about the music but if every one was plain Jane’s what would women have to aim for? we all want, secretly or not, to look like the celebs we see and that i think is healthy (unless it is taken to the extreme!)

  6. i guess looks do matter, but only a wee tiny bit in the grand scheme of things. because really, in the music industry, people who are involved in it are primary entertainers. that’s their service they offer – they sing/dance/entertain. and a dose of good looks will help these people become successful, because, you know, they’re more “visually appealing”.

sad but true, i feel in today’s world. 😛

however, i also feel that looks aren’t everything. even if you’re pretty but can’t really sing, people will most likely write you off as a “talentless little thing” anyway.

but i guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

so yeah. 🙂 that’s my two cents on the topic. 😀

  7. Dont think susan boyle looks has anything to relate to sex appeal, but still, she sells more than britney or gaga….

Real talent will finally get recognized…
